Ants

Facts

bullet Create their colonies always in the soil, very rarely they create colonies inside the building
bullet A colony of ants ranges between 100,000 - 500,000
bullet In the savanna of the African Ivory Coast the density of ants is more than 7,000 colonies and 20 million individuals per hectare.
bullet Queen ants have been known to live up to 15 years
bullet Ants carry weights twenty times their body weight
bullet When building their nests, they incorporate water traps to keep rain out
bullet They build their nest as deep as 4m in the soil
bullet A typical queen ant will usually fly to a new location to start a new colony by herself. She will not need to fly any more, so she sheds her wings.

Cockroaches

  •  A Cockroach can live up to a week without a head
  •  Cockroaches can survive radiation levels equivalent to a thermonuclear explosion
  •  Cockroaches are one of the oldest insects. There are cockroach fossil remains which date back 200 million years
  •  They can hold their breath for up to 40 minutes
  •  In SouthEast Asia they use cockroaches for medical purposes
  •  Cockroaches cannot see in red light, but see in green light very well

Rodent

Facts

Snakes

Facts

  •  The Large Whip snake (Το Θερκό) - The only endemic reptile in Cyprus - it is probably the longest snake in Europe
  •  The venom of the king cobra, the world's largest poisonous snake, is strong enough to kill an elephant
  •  Snakes do not pass urine, they have no bladders
  •  The only two countries devoid of snakes are Ireland and Antarctica
  •  Australia has the greatest number of venomous snakes
  •  All snakes are carnivorous; some also eat crayfish, eggs, porcupines, even turtles
  •  They are all exothermic - cold blooded
  •  Female snakes can be tracked during the mating season by males as they give off pheromones
  •  An angry snake can strike about half its length

Facts

  •  In a termite colony live between 100,000 - 1,000,000 termites

  •  They travel up 200 ft to find food
  •  Some species of subterranean termites can consume 15lbs (pounds) of wood per week!
  •  A small colony can devour a linear foot of a 2-by-4 in five months
  •  The total weight of all termites in the world is greater than that of all of humans in the world
  •  Termites can enter through a crack as tiny as 1/32 of an inch
