DESCRIPTION
Silverfish are small, soft insects without wings. The abdomen has three
filaments extending from it. Silverfish are not often seen by homeowners because
they are nocturnal and can run very swiftly.
HABITAT
Occasionally, they are found in bathtubs. They crawl in seeking food or moisture
and can't climb out. These insects prefer vegetable matter with a high
carbohydrate and protein content. However, indoors they will feed on almost
anything.
LIFE CYCLE Egg - Nymph - Adult Eggs - up to 100 laid over two month period, in crevices or dropped at
random Nymphs - up to 100 moults taking up to one year to develop into adult
Adults - Primitive wingless insects, silver grey up to 20-25 mm.
IMPORTANCE
Fabric & Paper Insects are destructive to clothes, paper and occasionally to
stored food such as cereal & dried meat. On occasion they reach unacceptable
numbers.
DISTRIBUTION
Found worldwide, often in association with humans. They very common in Cyprus
and Europe.
